Marc Klein created the .stl to .dat converter.  One thing that makes the
conversion difficult is the edgelines and conditional edgelines used in
the .dat format.  Marc can provide more info on its capabilities--I hope
it works out for you.

Hey, this could work!  I can spit .STLs outta Pro/E no-problemo.
I do it all the time at work.  For Steve, I believe the "STL"
stands for "stereolithography".  We generate these files at work
and feed them into a stereolithography machine.  It "grows"
replicas of the part contained in the .STL file out of resin.
We use these resin parts (rapid prototypes) for mock-ups and
for patterns to make metal castings.

Yes that's it.
You must check the tesalation of circular portions of a part to make the detection of primitive work, the facetisation
of cylindric portion of the part must fit exactly the facetisation of circular primitives that is 16 edges for a
complete circle.

Where can I find this STL2DAT converter?  Is it on Ldraw.org?

You can find more information about stl2dat and download the program on my site :
http://marc.klein.free.fr/lego.html

I have also a page on ldraw.org, in the downloads page.

To convert a STL file to a DAT file, my program changes the format, detects quad faces, adds edgelines and optional
edgelines and detects some circular primitives.
To make the detection of primitive work, the facetisation of cylindric portion of the part must fit exactly the
facetisation of circular primitives that is 16 edges for a complete circle.

(...) Salut Marc, et merci pour ta reponse. I visited your website and read your tips about using SolidWorks. I undestand what you mean now for the primitive detection, making the objects in CAD using polygons instead of circles. That makes things a (...) (24 years ago, 23-Dec-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)
