Personaly I would use 4-4edge and 4-4disc primitives on the bottom of the
craters to save space. With a file this big you want to save as much space as
possible.

That won't really work.  The edge and disc primitives only have 16 sides,
which isn't really enough for circles that big.  Plus, he'd have to redo the
surrounding mesh to meet up with a 16-sided circle.

thx for reading my mind ;-)

The only thing I can see that it's missing are the
optional (linetype 5) lines on the free-form surface, but unless you have
some way to automatically generate those, I don't think there is anything
that can be done about that.

I think ... max2dat can generate them. I have to check it. What are they for? I just started part-authoring in spring and I'm still
not familiar with all the specifications.

They would also increase the file size by a
huge amount.  (Around double maybe?)

well, the hill is made of more than 8000 points and nearly 5600 triangles so there would be approx. 4000 optional lines. so, yes it
would boost the filesize to 600 - 700 KB!

(...) They are used on curved surfaces so that they can receive an outline when edge lines are drawn. My program, LDView, can also use them as indicators of a curved surface, and use smooth shading. In fact, the lack of smooth shading was my first (...) (22 years ago, 4-Oct-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
