  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) Isn't this a matther of the installed operating system? I'm no PC expert, but i think that the clusters on a Windows 98 and a NT system are different, isn't it (FAT,FAT32,NTFS)? If you think that INLINING is a better solution, how can this be (...) (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) Why not 8 subparts? There are 8 symmetric sections in this part. If you're going to use subfiles to reduce the overall datasize, go all the way. :) Unfortunately, cutting out a 1/8 slice of the part might force some unnatural cuts. If this is (...)   Re: New Part: 30248 Helicopter skids (WAS) Re: Looking for parts

(...) Thanks for posting the comment along with the file. I think that was a good idea. Considering that we haven't heard from Chris Alano in awhile, I think it's ok that you posted the file. Steve (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) That's been my view as well. In addition, is disk space usage really a factor? I mean, I have a small (3 gig) hard drive, and my whole LDraw file set takes up only a couple megs. For someone with a less archaic system than mine, the storage (...) (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) Right, but what I want to say is that if the filesize is to big the file needs a lot of time to render. When this is splitted into subfiles the renderer only needs to read smaller subfile. This saves rendertime. Bernd (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) But remember that file size is only a consideration if it makes a difference to the total number of disk clusters it uses. If your disk is formatted to have 4Kb clusters each file takes 4Kb. One 4095byte file containing inlined code will use 1 (...) (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

(...) In general it's the symmetry, the file size or many repeating items of the part that makes sence to use subparts. In your case you can split it into 4 subparts, each one quarter of the file. So you could save filesize. e.g. only one track-end (...) (23 years ago, 22-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Re: Subfiles - Question

The the following Lugnet post and the follow-on reply. I think it gives a pretty good discussion of subparts vs. inlineing. (URL) (23 years ago, 21-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

Re: New Part: 30248 Helicopter skids (WAS) Re: Looking for parts

(...) OK, done. I have rotated it 90 degrees and submitted the file to the Tracker. As I don't know whether is OK or not to submit other people's parts, I added a note telling this, just to have the proceeding tried in a pilot case. /Tore (23 years ago, 21-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

  Subfiles - Question

Hello, Can someone tell me what the criteria is to create a subpart, instead of copying the whole code and rotate it a few times?   Re: New Part: 30248 Helicopter skids (WAS) Re: Looking for parts

(...) The part definitely hasn't been made official yet. A quick check on the parts tracker doesn't turn up a file either. If you want to finish this and submit it, that would be Very Cool. :) Steve (23 years ago, 21-Mar-02, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
