If share some detailed facts about how LPub and LSynth are failing,
including what version of Windows you are running,

LPub isn't finding POV-Ray. I'm working on the assumption that it's looking
specifically for 3.1 and I have 3.5 installed. I'm going to install 3.1 in the
coming days. LSynth isn't finding its own install directory. This may have
something to do with installing it as administrator and running it as a user,
since I'm able to run it as administrator. I'm running Win2K Pro.

There are two parts to the LSynth program: lsynthcp, the actual
brains of the bunch that does all the synthesis, and LSynth a simple
GUI front end...I'm sure you can make lsynthcp work from a DOS prompt.

Hey, and it works! Thanks. Perhaps I can convince you to make it simulate the
natural curl of stacking 1 x 4 x 3 panels. It's usually undesirable and the
model usually needs to overcome it, but I have made use of it before...

FWIW it was the announcement of the Virtual LEGO book that convinced me to
build a PC and install ldraw, but I didn't actually do so until I discovered
your book (it's currently available, VL isn't yet). The all-in-one installation
obviously hasn't helped me since I didn't take advantage of it, but having good
descriptions of the programs all in one place has been a real short-cut to
learning. I've already started building this...

I look forward to the release of the Virtual LEGO book.

(...) Hi Amy, I'm Kevin Clague, one of the authors of the Power Tools books, and the author of LPub and LSynth. I'm sorry that things didn't work for you right out of the shoot. Folks tell me that installing the whole package off the power tools CD (...) (21 years ago, 28-Apr-03, to lugnet.cad)
