Here again, I think that many people -- like yours truly here -- try to read
as little documentation as possible.  If the only thing that Level quality 3
does is to add the "Lego" logo, perhaps it should be labelled better.
What's more, I for one, would like the option of placing "LDraw" on those
studs instead, as was possible in an earlier version of L3PAO.  Admittedly,
I don't know what's involved with achieving the next suggestion, but a
modeler's initials might be a nice option too.

This is a suggestion appropriate for Jeff Boen, the author of L3PAO.  It
might be clearer to understand if the option read 'Place "LEGO" on studs.'
(with disclaimer of course)

I don't know their reasons any better than do you, but I am going to guess
that they simply didn't wan't non-lego items being sold in their space.
Wasn't Brickswest held at Legoland, CA?

The context of the original issue was this:  I was getting the LDraw.org
logo approved by LEGO for display in their park.  They claim a 'trade dress'
over 3D brick images, so I gladly made a compromise and had the current
fade-to-wireframe logo designed by a couple contributors.  LEGO approved
that (versus a solid brick), and this logo is more representative of what
the LDraw system is.

We wanted to put LDraw on the studs, but when the attorney at LEGO saw this,
she disapproved and told me to either put 'LEGO' on the studs or leave them
blank.  She said something to the effect of - if you are representing one of
our elements, represent it accurately.  She approved the logo with LEGO
printed on the studs.

I do not believe (but IANAL) they can come against people who want to put
LDraw in the studs on their own renderings, nor do I think they'd come after
LDraw.org for there being that possibility in the options somewhere.  It
might be worth asking.

Again from what I have observered, if a user wants to place LDraw, LEGO, or
even his initals or any other text on the stud of a virtual brick that is
OKAY AS LONG AS your are NOT selling the image, putting it as a building
instruction and selling it with your lego-brick made MOC.  That is where the
suits will come in for the kill. A rendered image is YOUR PROPERTY, your
creation, your copyrighted idea.  SO LONG AS YOU ARE NOT SELLING IT.  It's
the SALE that is what Lego company needs to protect.  They need to protect
their image that if you are going to sell say building instructions that the
general public doesn't not think that those building instructions are coming
from the lego company themselves.

(...) So... if we *are* selling the images (ie for instructions), then they can *not* have the Lego logo. But any other logo is OK. Is this correct? -- Tony Hafner www.hafhead.com (22 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.cad)

(...) Ahui was referring to the LDraw.org website distributing cloned parts. We acknowledge there are other uses for the LDraw modeling system and will be linking to them. But they're not 'Official LDraw.org' distributions, they're third-party (...) (22 years ago, 22-Apr-02, to lugnet.cad)
