There was a recent post about creating a links page for non-standard uses of
the LDraw format for clones and knex stuff:
http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/org/ldraw/?n=1777
So while they aren't proposing to distribute the files themselves, I don't
see quite the vehemence implied by the phrase "NEVER EVER."

Again, while what you say is probably true (I haven't researched it
specifically), there is a LOT of slippage. Just today someone was talking
about taking up the development of a file to represent the bubble canopy
that was created by another developer -- now I am not suggesting that he is
usurping the task, merely that there is a huge sense of community and
sharing as regards LDraw stuff. The original author probably doesn't care
if someone else wants to take up the work in progress. Authors, as far as I
have seen, are encouraged to build from primitives that are shared and so
on. Anyway, this is a small issue, at least in practice, as far as I have
seen...

I don't know that LDview does this, at least I haven't noticed it in my
version, but yes -- it does seem to be a L3PAO thing for sure. Both the
"Lego" and "Ldraw" logos are created by different versions of L3PAO.

Here again, I think that many people -- like yours truly here -- try to read
as little documentation as possible. If the only thing that Level quality 3
does is to add the "Lego" logo, perhaps it should be labelled better.
What's more, I for one, would like the option of placing "LDraw" on those
studs instead, as was possible in an earlier version of L3PAO. Admittedly,
I don't know what's involved with achieving the next suggestion, but a
modeler's initials might be a nice option too.

I don't know their reasons any better than do you, but I am going to guess
that they simply didn't wan't non-lego items being sold in their space.
Wasn't Brickswest held at Legoland, CA?

And again, while not automatic perhaps, some people may simply think that
level 3 is better quality OVERALL, and not just a logo tweak (it is
absolutely a labelling issue within the L3PAO interface). And FWIW, I have
seen a lot of renders done with the studs logo so I think your latter
assertion is actually false.

That should certainly be hashed out. It's not a small thing after all, and
a lot of others have put in a lot of time besides.

And some modelers have used LDraw to model household furniture plans, clone
bricks, and even Knex. But yeah, okay, whatever...
