Before running datshine, please enter:
C:LDRAW\set LDRAWDIR=C:LDRAW
in the same command window.
If this fix works, you may edit C:autoexec.bat by adding the line
set LDRAWDIR=C:LDRAW
and reboot. Then you wont need to enter this environment string anymore.

Actually, autoexec.bat only works in DOS/Windows9x/WindowsME. In
NT/Win2K/XP/Vista, you set environment variables via the System Control
Panel. In XP, the following will work (and may work in NT/Win2K/Vista):
- Bring up the System Control Panel (holding down the Windows/Start key and then hitting Pause/Break is a shortcut to this.)
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Click on the Environment Variables button.
- Click on either New button (top one for just your user, or the bottom one for all users).
- Enter LDRAWDIR as the variable name.
- Enter the path to LDraw as the variable value.
- Hit OK.
- Hit OK again.
- Hit OK again.

Thanks, Travis and Tore. Im able to render something now. But Im afraid I
have some more questions.
1) how do you incorporate the new lit part from datshine into a povray file
of a model containing several pieces? Would I just find that part that i
want lit within the model and replace it with in the new definition? and if
so which text in the povray file would I copy and paste?
and
2) Is it possible to light in different colors besides yellow?
anyways, hope Im not asking too much, since you are offering all your work
and your program free of charge. Look forward to hearing from you after
christmas, and merry christmas to you!

Merry Christmas to you, too. Dont be afraid to ask, were happy to help each
other-
1) Sounds like you postprocess pov-files. Absolutely nothing wrong with that!
Weve had some discussions here on lugnet.cad and both ways have their pros and
cons. I prefer to do as much as poosible *before* running the model through L3P,
as I find this approch easier. DatShine and, as the name suggests, PreL3P are
both oriented in the pre-L3P way.
Yes, it is possible to replace an official part with a part made by DatShine in
the pov-file - if youve made a lot of other postprocessing and dont wish to
start from the .ldr model again. But I wont explain that process until I have
to. :)
Its a lot easier to make the replacements in the .ldr model file, using ML-Cad,
Notepad or your editor of choise. Say you have a couple of 3005.dat you want
lit. Create 3005L46.dat using DatShine and store it in your Parts folder.
Then replace the corresponding references to 3005.dat in your .ldr file with
3005L46.dat, and run the model file through L3P. Thats it. The new pov file
will have shining 3005s where you replaced the references without and
postprocessing of the pov-file.
2) Yes, it is possible, and Ive already made some other texture definition
files besides L46.ldr (=yellow light). But they are in my old PC, not yet
migrated into my new. I will publish them later. Oh, now I see I have already
published two of them: TransRed Light
http://web.telia.com/~u66203131/LDraw/datshine/L36.ldr Clear Light
http://web.telia.com/~u66203131/LDraw/datshine/L47.ldr Right click on the links
one at the time and select Save As...
More definition files will come...
Keep experimenting, and dont be afraid to keep asking!
/Tore
