Really, I plan out the curve on the carpet, and build to match.
But there's also some smoothing involved, making sure that there's
some kind of relationship between the angle and the rate of change.
I'm hoping to get into frame-by-frame construction, but that hasn't
  happened just yet.

Hey, that reminds me ...

Actually, I've been working on frame-by-frame construction for my S-boat. • I've
completed the 20 main ribs, and am in the process of flushing out the contours
between them.  It's actually pretty satisfying, given that you feel as if
you're modeling the hull as accurately as the pixellation of LEGO allows.

So, wait--you're building ribs and plating between them?  I feel
for you--that seems like it would be really difficult in brick.
I had to build square and then plate the outside contours.  My
   heart goes out to you!

However, if it's any consolation for both approaches, a lot of
ship modelers do half-hulls that way--they build ribs and then
contour over them.  But they're working in wood, which makes that
   approach a little bit easier.

It *is* time consuming though; I blew up the drawings to the maximum size • possible
on an 11x17" sheet of paper, and then I do conversions on every measurement.
I'm convinced that this provides that maximum amount of room inside the walls,
while still providing the greatest amount of accuracy to the outside.  I'll
have to post some more pictures of the development soon - admittedly I didn't
get too do much on it this weekend, as I spent my time finishing up my GMC 6x6
truck :P  Which leaves a mere 6 or 8 WWII models in progress *sigh*

That's OK, it sounds like most of Axis R&D during the war...and,
   uh, 6x6 = pictures please?

Where do I sign up for unlimited brick and time supplies?

I must be crazy--I popped $150 for an absolute ton of dark grey
and tan large plates from Australia (130+ dkgrey 6x12 and 60 or
70 6x8 or larger tan plates), in preparation for the next project.
Add that to the 50 or 60 4x8 dkgrey and mess o' Landspeeders I
have, and maybe I can build something new without taking my
   monster apart.

But unfortunately, the time issue is definitely not being kind
to me.  Not in the slightest.

   best
