Ralph, I appreciate your constructive critisism, in reference to my F-16. I will
be posting pics of my highly detailed F-14 Tomcat on Brickshelf soon. The entire
fuselage of my F-16 was built around the front landing gear to make the jet
stable as it rested on the landing gear. I'm sorry you didn't like my design
(the fuselage and the "boxy" nose). I have been working with lego for over 20
years and I build for detail, functionability, and stability. I saw the pics of
your A-7 and I like the overall design, but it was very "boxy" and the canopy
was not Lego. Ralph, I do have to say, we could build some pretty kick-ass jets
if we put our heads together.

Respectfully, Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Don't get me wrong. I have seen some other F-16s build in LEGO, and in many
respects yours is the best.
I to have been building with LEGO for about 20 years as well, and like you I
value details and realism. I have to admit that stability sometimes suffers from
that. The A-7's landing gear, for instance, isn't very sturdy. It will hood up
the plane if it is stationary, but trying to taxi it around isn't a good idea.
The fuselage on a real A-7 is very slab-sided. I think I captured that look. The
main thing that's not completely to my liking on it is the rear end of the
fuselage, which should have a more circular cross-section. There I am faced with
the same difficulties you have with the intake of the F-16. As for the canopy, I
simply don't have aenough transparent pieces to give it the right size and
shape, and building it with one of the Star Wras canopies (as used on the Naboo
Starfighter, for instance) would have meant that it would be too small and
wouldn't be openable. I too value functionality. the canopy on your F-16 looks
great.

I think that we can agree that building jet-fighters is very hard, but also a
lot of fun because of that. I think it is much harder than building a car or
building trucks, for instance. That is not intended to insult anyone, but having
built many aircraft, trucks, and cars, that is my own observation. The shapes
are highly complex. The fuselage is usually very densly packed with moving bits
(landing gears, for instance, take up a lot of room, while space is usually at a
premium, not to mention variable geometry wings). Most of all, however, getting
the proportions right is very tough, and your F-16 to me doesn't look quite
right in that respect. Sorry.

In any case, I don't think that we need to put our heads together to build
kick-ass fighters. Despite all my comments, your F-16 definately falls into that
cathegory, and I would like to think that my A-7, but most of all my Tomcats
meet those standards. I am excited to read that you to have built a Tomcat and I
am looking forward too seeing it. You've probably made some different choices
than I have, and I would love to compare them. I don't know whether you've seen
any of my Tomcats.
I have built an F-14A
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=127826
and an, obviously quite similar, F-14D
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=127281
The latter was featured in Brickjournal Issue 2, in which I explained some of
the choices I made when building the aircraft. I would be interested to hear
your opinion.
I have been planning to build an F-16 again in the non-too-distant future. It is
most likely going to be a U.S. Navy F-16N adversary aircraft. Expect me to keep
your F-16 in mind when I build it.

Kind regards,
Ralph

Hi Ryan and Ralph I think you both build great models of modern jets. Also good to see this group becoming more active. A question to both of you what scale do you aim for? (1 stud to 1 feet = 1:38 is what I want to use but my models tend to be a (...) (18 years ago, 8-Jul-06, to lugnet.build.military)
