Well speaking of mecha designs in particular, without a doubt the VF-1X
series of variable mecha from Macross/Robotech completely facinated me as a
child. Actually getting one of these in a toy version in 1985 was even more
of an experience because I could see how everything worked and fit together.
I suppose the whole aspect and complexity of transformation was particularly
appealing to me. I actually still have the same toy I played with as a kid
sitting next to his lego counterpart.
In the context of Lego mecha, I'd also have to nod my head to the Lego
Purists. It was the first Lego mecha I saw that caused me to stare. I've
been building lego mecha since I was scooting around on "big wheels" but
nothing ever like that.
I also have to mention Dave Thomas Jr. because his collective of work helped
me to develop my skills. When I started getting into Lego mecha about a
year and a half ago it was his work that inspired me and that I decided to
study intently. I just loved the "unorthodox" ways in which he used pieces
to acheive his desired form while still making it seem so appropriate.
I always say, the more unorthdox the better. Why? Because there's no such
thing as a bad brick. :)
As I build more mecha, I am focusing a lot on the proportions and
relationships various parts have with one another. We all know that 3
plates make the height of a brick, but you will be stunned how many more
simple relationships like that exist, in multiple axes. I'm using more and
more of these relationships and proportions in my designs and hope to write
something up about them eventually. Very cool stuff and definitely worth
exploring.
Aside from being inspired by all the prodigious Lego work that flows through
here, I must mention Mamoru Nagano's Five Star Stories. The designs are so
exquiste and beautiful it continues to blow my mind. If you haven't seen
this stuff it is definitely worth checking out.
well, that's about it.

p.s. Chris Snead - I am doing some bad things with corregated. :) I think
you will like.
