why not use the 3l axle with stud (with the stud part) sandwiched between two 1x2 technic bricks. very stiff and gives you a 2l worth of axle to attach to.

That’s one of the techniques I picked up from Chris Snead. Unfortunately, that combo is still not strong enough to hold the guns up. Believe me, I tried it. :-)
