And some of us with huge collections never get around to building much because
we're always at the store or sorting pieces....
I think a key thing is to decide on a theme of interest, and work for a while
in that theme, buying sets to engance what you can do in that theme, and
actually sitting down and building instead of like me who is into almost
everything, and is (was) buying up sets faster than you could say boo.

Very good points (and Shiri's inn is one of the recent creations that I find
among the top creations - part of this is because in addition to just building
a building, she has built a background). Starting small also makes it more
likely you won't run out of pieces (Shiri - isn't that part of what stalled
the castle project, when you realized the shear quantity of bricks and castle
wall sections necessary to build a decent castle?).
To me, my best creation so far is my Blacktron Challenger, inspired by the
Blacktron Invader and a bunch of extra Blacktron parts. It also started as a
small project. The initial project was to change the cargo module from opening
at the end, to opening along the sides. Once I got that down, I proceeded to
make a larger ship to go with the modules I was going to build.
Another way to start is to pick a set you like, and try and improve it. My Red
Seas Barracuda is along these lines. I started with the concept of using red
and dark grey instead of the black and yellow of the Black Seas Barracuda. I
also had in mind making the necessary modifications to make the ship work
better with Steve Jackson's Pirate Game. I am quite pleased with the final
ship, though it is 95% the same as a BSB (other than color).

| Frank and Shiri, make a lot of good point. Definitely start small, check out what others are build and most of all have FUN! Personally, I got back into LEGO because of Res-Q Theme, and a lot of my first creations were all closely related to Res-Q, (...) (24 years ago, 13-Jul-00, to lugnet.build)

Definitely, it's also easier to keep focus when you're only thinking of one theme, not to mention if all your resources (time, money, creative fluids) are directed one way, instead of several, the output will certainly be bigger/better (I say, (...)
