It is not a trans. minifig head. The crystal ball does not have a stud on top,
though I was it did. Just as a small side note, this piece is not the same as
the trans. bell-jar found in the Adventurers Accessories set.
I checked out this set and all the other sets I could find that had witches'
crystal balls because I'm looking for trans minifig head pieces for lamps for
my train station. But I bought some anyway in case I can find a way to make it
look good.
Those crystal balls are really like upside down round fishbowls with a round
2x2 socket "mouth". The socket, as has been seen on one of the set boxes, is
wide enough so that a minifig head (skeleton head on the set box) fits nicely
inside it, and the ball has a magnifying effect on what's inside it.
IMO, they make ugly train station lamp lenses for small stations like mine and
TLG-made train stations. But for bigger train stations and buildings they make
excellent lamp lenses for thicker style lamps such as can be found on pillars
in front of government buildings, libraries, museums, etc. I imagine even a
jumbo LED would fit nicely inside one, and certainly a flashlight bulb
(careful it doesn't get too hot! :)
I forget where it is now, but I saw a page once that had one of the crystal
balls with tiny colorful round cake sprinkles in it stacked on a small red 2x2
base, and it was supposed to be a gumball machine. Very cool.
