Re: JPL engineer needs help with space instr. model

Wow! that's quick! (...) Actually, I would not know. JPL is one of many NASA centers, and there are 6000 employees at JPL with hundreds of projects and no chat rooms like this, to be sure. Legos have been used to build rovers and stuff for kids as (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: JPL engineer needs help with space instr. model

(...) Cool! Actually, I'm surprised NASA diddn't do this with sojurner back in 96. (...) This probably means gluing the non-moving parts together. That is how all of the "official" models like store displays are built. (...) For most of us this is a (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) I sort by form and color. I have LEGO storage drawers (5225, 545, etc.). Each drawer is a color. 1 drawer for each color of 1x, 2x and plates. I also have drawers for miscellaneous elements by color: expanders, roofs, 5 tall bricks, rounds, (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

JPL engineer needs help with space instr. model

Hi all! I am a field research engineer at JPL for the MISR project of the Earth Observation System. Our URL is: www-misr.jpl.nasa.gov. I have been involved with our project's outreach effort for some years and came up with an idea of using Legos to (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) I faced that intimidation problem, too, when I initially wanted to change from color to shape. I'm actually still in the process of organizing (something that started quite a few months ago). Hopefully I'll be done by the time I have to move (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) Ah yes, that's the problem, getting over the intimidation of wanting to actually SORT the pieces. I originally wanted to sort by shape/form but found that I was going to be at it for the rest of my life (hey I was ten at the time) so I went by (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Sproat wroat: (...) I started out sorting by color, then resorted to form (because the arguments for it sounded so LOGICAL), then found I hated having things sorted that way and went back to by color. I now have enough basic bricks that they have to (...) (25 years ago, 5-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) one (...) Color, for sure. I'm a big fan of the "Walmart Box" (can't beat #pieces/$). I use a separate box for each color of the basic bricks. Each box is sub-divided to 1x1, 2x2 etc using zipper-lock freezer bags. Each box is labeled (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) Yep. That's what I've found-- Back when I had about 10-15 thousand pieces, I decided it was high time they were sorted. So I went with the sort-by-color technique. Some colors were not too bad, but mostly, it was hard to see what pieces were (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) Well, I do both, an one to an extreme! I sort all BASIC bricks, plates and bricks, by color and form. So I have one (or multiples) of drawers for white 1x1 bricks, etc. All the other non BASIC bricks, I sort by shape as well. The color doesn't (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

(...) I use both methods, shameless mixing and matching. :) My more specialized pieces are sorted function-first. I find it much easier when looking for a red 1x4 arch to search through a (relatively) small drawer of arches, than to sea the (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

I have to say I am firmly on the sort by form side. It may be because I don't have as many pieces as many of you guys, but once mine are sorted into the kind of part they are, it is very easy for the eye to pick out the color I want. If all of mine (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

Re: I'm sorting by color now!

Jeremy: You make some quite good points about sorting by colour, but you will not make me shift. I don't mind building the first iterations of a model in random colours, but I do like to know where I can find the piece I am missing. Play well, Jacob (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

(...) jerremy ~ i've sorted by color since day one, and it's the only way to go-go, baby! after color division, i go brick, plate, slope, with plates divided into large (a 4x4 plate being the smallest of these) and small (including all 2x). reds (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

  I'm sorting by color now!

...after almost a year of sorting by form and functionality. That's more than 30,000 Lego pieces, sorted by color into about a dozen plastic drawers measuring roughly 11 x 13 x 3 inches. (1) Oh no! It's so hard to find The-Piece-I-Need now! (...) (25 years ago, 4-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)
