I am interested in exploring your idea for video like the one Eric and Jeff
from RTL showed.
Are you thinking about having LUGs and individuals create non-animated videos
of their work? I think this would be a great idea.
As for the filming video from the computer screen. There is one basic reason
for this. People are submitting their entries on CD-Rom. Since no VCR player I
know is capable of showing CD-Roms I must find a way to convert the Computer
CODEC version to a Television format. This is easier said than done.
Unfortunately, because of the pethora of codecs and video formats for the
coputer it is not as easy as it should be to dump a computer video to the VCR.
There were only two animators that had to have their video shown this way. I
have appologized to each for not having the equipment necessary to make the
conversion. Jared Gilbert offered to do this for me, but owing to the lateness
of the announcement and the late deadline for entries, I only asked Jared to
provide this service for the Comedy Competition. He was gracious to do so and
sent me the video tapes just in time for me to add to them and leve for the
convention.
I have considered making it a requirement for entries to only be received on
VHS or Mini-DV format, but many animators have expressed problems with this.
Many do not have the gear necessary to do this. Also its not just a gear issue,
but also the video software programs used may not be able to take a persons
files and output them to TV without the original hardware and software. I.e.
people sending me their files will not convert to video no matter what I do.
Also there is the issue of 3 different video formats. America and Canada use
the NTSC standard while Europe uses PAL and Australia uses SECAM. If anyone is
willing to help me convert from one format to NTSC, I welcome their
participation in the organizing committee.
I appreciate these comments and I welcome additional comments from others. I
endavor to try to continue to improve the format and outlet for animators
through the Animation Festivals.
