Re: Message awaiting authentication —Don Heyse
(...) Good question. Are NNTP passwords transmitted in plain text? Perhaps that's the reason it's not been implemented on lugnet. Or maybe it's because they want to allow non members in via NNTP. If that's the case, why not allow members in with a (...) (21 years ago, 26-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Perhaps a clever coder could screenscrape LUGNET's web interface to give posting capabilities from their own private NNTP server fed article stream? (perhaps supplied by the "avid" technology or something? I dunno) Meaning that the (...) (21 years ago, 26-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Don Heyse
(...) You're missing the point Larry. NNTP is a well supported, standardized interface. Because of this, there are many very nice already existing NNTP clients. (I remember using EMACS to read NNTP news while editing code perhaps 20 years ago). (...) (21 years ago, 26-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Thomas Garrison
(...) I don't get this. The LUGNET limitation would be that posting setup is HTTP-based, but I think it's all text, really. After that, HTTP is an *option*, but you can get by (better, IMHO) with SMTP or SMTP and NNTP. I'm not seeing how someone who (...) (21 years ago, 26-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Don Heyse
(...) I give up. Maybe you're right. I just thought I'd make a suggestion that could possibly make lugnet better. Who knew I was straying into debate territory. Let's everyone chant together. Lugnet is perfect! Lugnet is perfect! Change is bad... (...) (21 years ago, 27-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions, lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Who said that? I'm not seeing that in this thread, although the thread (and other related ones) has some aspects of "usenet is better because it is free" koolaid drinking to it. So it may be that there's some rigidity present, yes... just not (...) (21 years ago, 27-Nov-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Larry Pieniazek
(...) I'm pretty sure I'm not missing the point, which is that LUGNET isn't actually standard NNTP and doesn't have standard NNTP needs, for good and valid reasons according to its owners. Further, no matter how wonderful a standard is, if it's not (...) (21 years ago, 27-Nov-03, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

Re: Message awaiting authentication —Don Heyse
(...) Actually, that's what I was hoping for when I asked the question. For Todd to think about it for a few seconds and then decide if there was possibly a way to make an improvement to lugnet without a whole lot of effort. Instead I got you, (...)          Re: Message awaiting authentication —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Where did I say that? I can think of a host of things I'd like to see added (and have made suggestions about them in the past) and I would in no way equate my saying "I'm not someone that says that a private service has to accomodate all (...)
