Email addresses are a fundamental element of the NNTP & SMTP header paradigms.
Although (in theory) it would be very easy to 'hide' email addresses from
non-members via the web interface, it's much less practical via SMTP and
almost completely impractical via NNTP (since the NNTP server here does no
user authentication (NNTP authentication can be horrible mess for users)).

As for the spam going to the newsgroups, it can (and it does) only if the poster has gone through the mail setup procedure. Otherwise, (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
