First of all, in this case, it seems like the spammer just replied to any
message he could find in lugnet... As for the spam going to the newsgroups, it
can (and it does) only if the poster has gone through the mail setup procedure.
Otherwise, the messages will just bounce.

If the emails are shown only to members, the only people who can spam other are
lugnet memebers. I'm sure Todd could just flag any such spammer so he will NOT
see emails, just like any non-member.

| (...) Email addresses are a fundamental element of the NNTP & SMTP header paradigms. Although (in theory) it would be very easy to 'hide' email addresses from non-members via the web interface, it's much less practical via SMTP and almost completely (...) (24 years ago, 26-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
