Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) When we have the tables, and the auto-sorting of rated messages.. will we need to see the actual ratings for individual posts? It could solve the problem of being influenced by others, and the problem of depressing people by giving them a less (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) what if instead of seeing a number as the rating (which we can all read and react to) we'll see it as a color - anywhere from #00FF00 for 100 to #FF0000 for 0 - it won't be obvious what the exact rating was (and it doesn't really matter what (...)   Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) In a way, it's kinda like that now, at least in the sense that the amount of color gets progressively stronger as more and more people give input. Thus, something rated by no one is pure gray, and something rated by only one or two people is (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) ah... but I meant instead of the score saying "rating: 50" it would just have a color for rating... though you will lose the color coding for the number of people who rated... :/ :) Dan (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) Er, what I just wrote was backwards. You're talking about having color but no numbers? How is that different from having the numbers? Even the 6x6x6 safe palette shows six gradations of red from black to red, and very few people here (as a (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) it's different because when you see a number, I think you're more likely to think "nonono, this post should be a 70, not a 30" - when you see a color, it's a less obvious thought.... and another question (just curious really) - since most (...)   Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) You mean in the rating colors? It's actually a smooth scale from 00 to FF -- but since the ratings often come out to 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100, these map fortuitously to 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF (the 6x6x6 safe palette). Neat accident, huh? (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) the fact that I can re-set-up my account (/news/post/setup) and have it automagiclly put my name/email etc when I post through the web interface... However, I just had to disable that, at least at home, since both me and Jenn post from the (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: Strategic Rating (Was: Re: Next and Prev buttons or links)

(...) Just an FYI... Human interface guidelines suggest that color should never be the sole carrier of information, for several reasons. The obvious reason is so that people with difficulty distinguishing colors or shades of gradation can use your (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) very good point that I didn't consider... Is putting an ALT caption still considered not good enough? that way, if you point over the color, it'll tell you the numerical value of it? (...) heh, yah, that wouldn't have occured to me either. (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
