Typical programmer answer. :-) Clearly it's not giving good results. But it's
working as designed, so it's not a bug. It's a feature. Or a mis-feature. (1)

Whatever you call it, it's not meeting requirements from the end user point of
view. (2) The requirement is that usable fragments of the post be shown in the
brief view so that the reader can make the read/no-read decision about it. The
program is WAD but that's not happening.

| (...) Ya, Agreed. At the time the "Brief" view-mode was conjured up, there were relatively few messages going by with garbled line-endings, and it didn't show up much at all. People seem to be getting a lot more lazy these days about cleaning up (...) (25 years ago, 24-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
