At various times yesterday, for an hour today, and still now as I
write this I have been downloading messages. And Agent STILL says it
has 137 tasks left to complete (the good news? That number started out
over 500)

I'm not sure what is causing this.
[It is 9:50AM Pacific time]

1) My decision to download ALL the loc.* groups (forgetting that
everyone would have 2 messages in it -- Perhaps you should have
crossposted at least the Terms of Use, Todd? If you ever do a mass
post again, cross-posting this would be a Good Thing for those of us
who can deal with crossposts]
2) Load on Lugnet's servers?

Here is a list of the points in the past 3 days where the server load
average was 0.5 or higher:

The 0.00's there are highly suspicious...  Could have been a network
traffic problem (at pair.com or elsewhere) preventing anyone from accessing
the lugnet.com server.  Someone mentioned in e-mail this morning that they
experienced a couple DNS lookup failures for a few minutes.

And here is a list of the total number of active NNTP connections at

I must admit, I don't understand net hiccups much.

But everything I can tell from the server is that it's just sitting here
purring along very quietly and happily.

3) Load on my local computer? (I WAS running other tasks
simultaneously. -- downloading mail, RTL -- I stopped. I don't see a
noticeable improvement. But maybe it's just me)

If Agent starts multiple threads of execution, and your OS doesn't handle
large numbers of multiple threads well or Agent's multithreading code is
not O(n), that might be the problem...?

Thanks for letting me know...it's good to hear about any issues like this.

(...) It was technically, according to my watch, exactly 9:53AM when I wrote the time in that article and my Task number was still steadily heading downward as time passed.
