As a person who has spent way too many hours on the web over the last few
years I'm not sure why you claim that this link *ought* to work.  I almost
never find myself trying to guess the directory/URL structure of someone
else's website.

I think Larry is absolutely right.  It -ought- to work like that, in case
someone happens to type that in if they can't find the page easily (say,
they knew it was there and they'd been to it before, but they couldn't
remember the URL off-hand).  The reason it ought to work that way is because
there's nothing at /members/ and because redirection is trivial to set up.
So it only helps, it can't hurt.  And therefore not doing it hurts.

Try this:
http://quotes.yahoo.com/

to see what I mean. Yahoo understands the principle of least surprise.
That is not a valid link but it's a natural one to try, so they put
something there.

Again, I'm confused.  I'm not sure why this is a "natural one to try".
When I looked at it in your posting, I supposed that you were looking for
'quotes', such as, "To be or not to be."  But Yahoo supposed that you were
looking for financial information, because that link returns the following

IIRC, http://quotes.yahoo.com/ actually used to go to Yahoo's stock quotes
page a while back.  I don't know about you, but it's much easier for me to
type Ctrl-O quotes.yahoo.com Enter than it is to move my hand over to the
mouse and click up Yahoo and then click down through the links to find what
I want...so I completely understand what Larry means.  :)

I would never presume to speak on Todd's behalf (as he wouldn't speak on
mine) but I'm gonna take a guess that the fact there isn't a link from the
main page to the members section is simply something that Todd hasn't
gotten around to yet.  Or maybe it's just that no one's suggested it until
you brought it to our attention.

Nope, that's not why.  It's not a time thing -- it would take less than a
minute to add a link there.  The reason there hasn't been a highly visible
link is because memberships aren't ready to be heavily promoted yet.  Now
that the numbers are into the 150's, however, it's probably safe to make it
a little bit easier to help newbies find the intro page (but not too easy
yet).

You can be sure then when there's more actual meat there, BTW, it'll be
impossible to miss.  :)

Hi Larry, I don't normally like to disagree with fellow LUGNETer's, and I certainly don't want to start an arugument over this, but I do find myself drawn to respond to your curious comments. I doubt that it was your intention, but your comments (...) (25 years ago, 13-Jan-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
