Eeek, but it shouldn't *chop* at 512 characters, should it?!  :-p

No. See <URL:http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/gnksa/gnksa.txt> and
<URL:http://www.landfield.com/usefor/>

The magic number seems to actually be 998.

What you said before -- keeping the first reference and eliminating some of
the middle ones -- seems much more sane.  That way they're all still  <.*> .

Yes. From the GNKSA, above:

<<Followup agents SHOULD not shorten References  headers.   If
it  is absolutely necessary to shorten the header, as a des-
perate last resort, a followup agent MAY do this by deleting
some  of  the  message IDs.  However, it MUST not delete the
first message ID, the last three message IDs (including that
of  the immediate precursor), or any message ID mentioned in
          the body of the followup.>>

Guess what newsreader mentioned in the msg-id to the right of that
phenomenon exhibits _exactly_ that behavior by default..
slrn?

Huh. Took at quick look at the source. Too tired to analyze properly, but
from what I can see it does have code to handle this intelligently and isn't
just truncating. Or isn't supposed to be, at least.

Incidentally, does that msg-id having a hostname that isn't lugnet.com
mean anything? leafnode server? Reverse-DNS to something meaningful?
Dunno.

Message-ID should be the host from which the message was submitted, IIRC.

(...) Note that the GNKSA is here itself quoting another document, the in-progress update for RFC 1036. (25 years ago, 8-Jan-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
