Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

I was serious about this. Make it moderated. I'm disappointed that not one person even said "what a lame idea"... :-) (...) (25 years ago, 5-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) It might have something to do with the fact that you're not wrong (this time ;) Yet after reading Todd's admonitions, I decided to see if I could come up with a legal .QOTD from recent lugnet posts. Nothing struck me. Funny things are (...) (25 years ago, 5-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) I thought the lameness of the idea was self-evident. :) (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) Really? Why? Do tell. Seems a natural for a moderated group. And we need to experiment with them here anyway. Heck, I volunteer to moderate it (for 6 months, no more). (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) Hey Lar, You -do- know what's involved in moderating, right? You get mailed an NNTP article via SMTP, which you then import into an editor, munge the headers, add an 'Approved-By' header, and then repost via NNTP. There are tools to help with (...)   Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) Yes. Long term you will probably provide an interface for members to do this easily. Till then, no problem. I'll have my lar@voyager.net account receive these. Munging the headers should not be a problem from there. It would be hard to do (...) (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) There's another icky sticky problem with moderated groups. When you post to one, your message disappears into the wild blue yonder. You don't find out whether your post made it there or not until you either see it minutes/ hours/days later or (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) I agree. Considering that this is supposed to be fun, I think too many people are making this way to cerebral!!! Its beginning to look a whole lot like the dreaded LEGO/LEGOS threads. (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) Hey, you said you were disappointed, so I tried to say what you wanted to hear. Didn't actually think about it. (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

(...) OK, OK, I'm over analysing (1) here, but... What I meant was that my append seemed to have sunk without a trace. I of COURSE always expect that everyone immediately applauds my ideas as brilliant, terrifically on topic, and well timed(2)(3), (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group

Kill QOTD, I don't care, it's the easiest solution. It's not a high value add group anyway. But I do think we need to explore the mechanics and technology of moderation as a community experiment. Moderation (or review of information) will appear (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)
