  Re: Mechanical Memory for Computing

(...) Depends on what you call 'recent' :-) The DEC PDP-8 had 12-bit words with 6-bit bytes, if I recall correctly. There were also computers with 36-bit words containing six 6-bit bytes in one word (DEC 10/20?), or three 12-bit bytes. The DataSaab (...) (21 years ago, 30-Jun-03, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) Actually, 64K of RAM is quite a bit. You have to remember that with the RCX you had 32K for everything. With the NXT all of the program code will go into (and run directly from) the 256K of flash -- this includes things that take up the most (...) (19 years ago, 7-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics, FTX)

(...) This change is correct, although it will not work by itself. Using only this all memory will be freed when the RCX is powered off, including program memory. To work correctly another change to tm.c is necessary, so memory allocated by kernel (...) (24 years ago, 1-Aug-00, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

This note is of interest to people who build their own RCX firmware. It provides some additiional insight to the recent post concerning dual use of upper memory range and the motor control register. There's a trade-off between real time performance (...) (22 years ago, 1-Dec-02, to lugnet.robotics.rcx, lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

The pollm command lets you look at memory from 0x40 to 0x440 (1 K). The unused memory does not look like code. It looks like the system attributes are available there--probably battery level and such. Also variables must be there. We have 10 globals (...) (25 years ago, 26-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)
