Well here's another unknown LEGO set (there's still plenty out there!).... It was purchased by a German acquaintance at a German auction, and is unlike any wooden box set I've seen before... very unusual. It has 24 compartments... which is the (...) (12 years ago, 10-Jan-13, to lugnet.general)

(...) Well got a quick reply from the Billund Archives folks today. They have never seen that set either... and believe it is of Swedish origins (circa 1959), and as I mentioned, likely an institutional school set. Gary (12 years ago, 12-Jan-13, to lugnet.general)

It started in 1957... when Axel Thomsen, a friend of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen who owned a doll house making factory in Lerum Sweden started making wooden box sets for LEGO sales in Sweden and Germany, the 2 countries that he was the LEGO Director (...) Dave, I'm familiar with that box! ;-) Starting around 1971 TLG started individual parts sales via the retailers (using unsold leftover wooden boxes) on some countries, and via Mail Order in others. TLG could have made life easier for collectors... but there must be a little bit of Sadistic nature in their mindset... ;) Over the years they've produced a mind boggling amount of changes to so many sets. (...) LOL... there's so many strange variants to basic sets in the 1980s that I can't even keep it straight. Recently found out that the 84 piece 533 basic set (1984), the 98 piece 517 basic set (1985), and the 119 piece 510 basic set (1987) are all (...) (12 years ago, 27-Jan-13, to lugnet.general)

One of my favorite LEGO sets of all time was the 1956-65 Esso Service Station. This set was produced in Denmark, Norway and Sweden from 1956-58 using the 1310 set number, before switching to the 310 set number in 1958. It started production in other (...) LEGO stickers were introduced in circa 1972. Prior to that LEGO sets would have printed bricks... mostly in the 1x6 and 1x8 sizes. However with the advent of stickers, the printed bricks became much less used in LEGO sets, thus saving a lot of money (...) (12 years ago, 28-Jan-13, to lugnet.general)

Another set that had 2 variations came out in 1989... the 6661 MOBILE TV STUDIO SET. This set came with a "TV" pattern on two 1x4x3 blue panels, and two1x1 yellow tiles with the number "2" on them. Well many of you have already seen the latest of the Modular LEGO buildings... the 10232 Palace Cinema Set.   Extremely Rare MISB Mosaik Set Located...
 
An example of the oldest non-building LEGO set in MISB has been located. It is the 1955 dated 1300 "Mosaik Set", sold only in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This set was not at all popular, and many of the examples may have been sent back to TLG. TLG (...) (12 years ago, 20-Feb-13, to lugnet.general)
