Well many of you have already seen the latest of the Modular LEGO
buildings... the 10232 Palace Cinema Set.

Facebook has a nice overview from one of the 2 designers...
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=680484152731&set=vb.207089142656976&type=3&theater

This building design is based on American movie palaces of the
1920s... namely the design of famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre (today
known as Mann's Chinese Theatre)... in Hollywood.  It even has the
stars of Hollywood sidewalk (first started when legendary American
actress Mary Pickford accidentally stepped in some cement in front of
the theatre back in the late 1920s).

The interesting thing is that it has a partly European name.  In
USA/Canada we call them "movie theatres"... but in Europe they call
them "cinemas".

Ironically the earliest known image of a LEGO cinema/theatre is from
a British magazine 1963 LEGO Ad.  It shows... what else... an earlier
version of the "PALACE CINEMA"!!

... as seen in my 73 chapter 2,800 page DVD/download LEGO collectors
guide... in the chapter on LEGO Advertisements.

Enjoy!

Gary, do you have any more information on that old Palace Cinema - I
couldn't find it in my copy of your guide - did I miss an update, or are you
talking about what will be?

Is it a unique build for the ad, or was it something retailers could order?
Any information would be welcome, as your picture started an interest on the
Swedish Lego forum www.swebrick.se  where it was suggested we start a
competition for rebuilding the old model in the new scale and style.

1963 is also exactly 50 years ago...

Hi Anders!!

Sorry about that... that image will be in the next version of the LEGO
DVD/download (in about 4-5 months)... which will be free to current owners.  I
was looking at the "updated" chapter.  I'll have to make sure to look at the
correct version (the released one)... and comment that it will be coming out in
the future.  With 2.800 pages... it must be torture trying to find an image that
isn't there (like we say here in the USA... "like finding a needle in a
haystack!".  lol...

So I will be more careful and say it will be in the next release of the DVD
download....

Here are some other pictures that will be in the next LEGO download version...

A first LEGO set... a 1949 Automatic Binding Bricks set (in rare wooden box)...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/82930629@N08/8309989320/sizes/l/in/photostream/

The 1986 1400 LEGO set (sold only thru schools)... that started making LEGO a
common toy throughout Japan.  Before 1986... it was only sold in department
stores in large Japanese cities, and most people there didn't know LEGO...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/82930629@N08/8292482117/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Orange LEGO Windows (Sweden only).... 1954-56... the LEGO Archives in Billund
have no record of these...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/82930629@N08/8247316987/sizes/l/in/photostream/

The 6661 Mobile TV Studio set... that comes in a very rare WDR (Westdeutsche
Rundfunk) German TV station Promotional version....
http://www.flickr.com/photos/82930629@N08/8423008676/sizes/l/in/photostream/

There are many other images that will be included as well in the new DVD
download version.

I'm also adding a few new chapters... one will be how LEGO minifigs started with
the first LEGO figures (270 Cyclists and 271 Policemen) in 1956... and continue
up to 1978 when the modern minifigs were introduce.

But I will be careful in mentioning what's in the CURRENT DVD/download... and
keep it separate from the NEW DVD/download!  :)

Cheers,
Gary Istok

P.S.  Anders... I'd be interested in posting on your Swedish site... would they
accept posts in English?  (I can use Google Translate to understand replies.)
There are so many fascinating things about LEGO sold in Sweden that I would love
to share with Swedish LEGO collectors!
