I don't know about the RCX, but that would certainly be an interesting idea! As for compatibility, what you say is not entirely true. According to the information provided on the HiTechnic website about their IR-Link sensor: Control LEGO R/C trains (...) (17 years ago, 13-Jan-08, to lugnet.robotics)

hello, The new Lego Power Functions system use infrared remote control. Has anyone tried to use a RCX to control it? Found it on Peeron right after I posted: If you click the official Peeron color chart link, then click the link for the color you're interested in, you get a list of inventoried parts I hate it when this happens.
