I tend to agree. Also, the contest should be expanded to anyone who cant
afford LEGO bricks. Allowing MegaBloks, Tyco, BestLock, and BTR pieces for the
Joe Vig Contest should be allowed. Heck, some might not be able to afford
building block toys at all, so we should expand the contest to include any
building material you can find, including dirt, twigs, and chewed gum.

Wow, (while I can give a polite "LOL" to the well played sarcasm,) my stomach
turns as socialism takes another blow in the face from capitalism.
Lenny while I have always respected your points, and will continue to here...
either you are the king of mixed messages, or I see/saw qualities in you that
don't seem to make sense on the whole to me based on the parts of your
personality I am familiar with. Sympathy for one example.
Colour me, with rose coloured glasses, but I have always felt the point of
having a "community" was to share, encourage and enlighten others that share a
common interest. Silly me, I want to learn and grow my own skills from the
collective strength of others. Their realised concepts, conquests over the
constraints of the bricks, the clever discoveries and outstanding executions
based on the knowledge, skills and development of their efforts. I didn't
realise it was more about the high school mentality of "my member is bigger than
yours", those that die with the most bricks, win.... or the sad reality of
securing everyone in a neatly labelled box.
Yeah yeah yeah, I get it, sign on the dotted line, rules are rules and those
that set up the contest have stated their decision. I do not aim to change or
judge that, ~AND~ I would feel differently if the original post was trying to
pull some scam or if someone else that followed the rules lost out to someone
that had disregarded them for no other reason than just being a jerk. But as I
see it, that was not the case here, (and considering the following facts, such
as Lugnet going for a 7 hour period with out a single post, and the fact that
recently there are as few as 13-15 posts for a 24 hour period) I think we would
all be off a lot better off if we stopped forcing issues, and cut everyone just
a tad bit of slack.
Of course, that's just me, and my suit hating, tree hugging ways... I know I
couldn't willingly exclude anyone that went to an effort and admitted their
shortcomings. It's not news to many of you that I have issues when it comes to
conforming and I have spent a good part of my life embracing and encouraging
those that need to, or should, walked to the beat of their own drum, and
thankfully I was lucky to have had the gift of being treated that way by a few
important mentors in my life. I have no shame or remorse for wanting to be
inclusive and harbour no resentment to those that don't want to, or can't. I do
feel compelled to at least defend the reasons I want to be part of this
community, and nowhere does that include dismissing anyone's effort over a small
amount of printing on a yellow round one by one.
Respectfully submitted,
Janey "Red Brick"

I tried to succinctly explain that I was stunned by a decision that was made,
for what appeared to be, valid reasons. I said I was saddened.
Your (in appearance) callous reply, only shows me that the Wide and Embracing

Did you post this message because you are saddened, or because you wanted to
take a shot at Lenny? If you dont like the contest sponsors ruling, then do
something helpful, like John Neal did. Or maybe sponsor your own contest - one
without rules, perhaps?
Why all the outrage over the fact that a contest has rules and that those rules
were enforced? The response is especially inexplicable given that the situation
seemed to have been resolved quite nicely before it was taken up as a cause
celebre.

I dont think its really that complicated. The
rules are clear and were
fairly enforced; Linus gracefully accepted the ruling; John is helping him
comply with the rules. Whats the problem?

My sentiments as well. Im glad the rules are enforced, which ensures that this
contest is more enjoyable in the end. There really is no need for a greater
debate than that.

While there is no need for debate for this particular example I dont think it
is entirely unneccesary. The debate goes beyond the current example into the
wider realm of contests, rules, strict interpretations, internet manners etc.
Just because this particular example is resolved for the parties concerned
doesnt mean there isnt legitimate grounds for a general debate.
Tim
PS. As it stands I agree with Nelson that rules of competitions should be
enforced, if only because some people may make great efforts to follow them and
making them more flexible diminishes those peoples efforts.

Ergo, to see other strict rule enforcement within the WEC made me sad.

happened when people reply to my post with sarcasm.

Dear Janey,
I have to take issue with the above statement. A yellow round one by one is one
of these things whereas Im sure you mean a yellow head
which is an entirely different thing. Im sure you
understand the importance of correct nomenclature.

Me! Me! Me!!! I want sarcasm!!!!!!
If it was my contest, and only if it was my contest, I would have stated in 'da
rulz' that Joe Vig has to be composed of such'n such colour of torso, legs, and
use Ron's head.
*However*, I would have also specified that, in lieu of Ron's head, you could
use the classic smilie face 'cause that's all there was from '78 until a few
years back--and if people stopped pruchasing LEGO in the past decade, they would
not have had any minifig head besides the classic smilie face.
See, the torsos and legs that make up Joe Vig have been around since mini-figs
began. Ron's head--not so much. I think that's a legitimate consideration.
Sure, Ron's head is easily purchased from Bricklink (or given, as John so
wonderfully demonstrated). That said, 20ish years of 1 smilie face should also
be deemed sufficient.
But that's just me.

I stopped purchasing Lego before 1978, and I *demand* to be able to
submit a Joe Vig contest entry using my blank-faced and armless old
minifigs. With a police hat, not the fancy brown male hair from 1979.
I also see the need for an alternative using only regular bricks to
build Joe, in case someone stopped purchasing Lego before the early
1970's and feels left out.
We also need rules for a 2:1 scale 16x16 vig where you don't need
to have access to the fancy new 1xN slim bricks introduced in the
sixties.
Seriously, I doubt that anyone on Lugnet has *stopped* buying Lego.
I did stop before 1978, but I soon started again, when Technic
took off and became a good excuse to keep buying.
In my opinion, a vignette entry and any other public posting is
a good and welcome *reason* to buy a few extra pieces.
But I can quit any time I want. Really. Just not right now.
