Be careful what you say: they may come and haul you away to set 1199 for a
little "re-education"...
Returning to the original theme of the thread: yes, by modern AFOL
standards, the Cobi sets are terminally hokey and unrealistic. But they're
not that different from TLG's own polybag sets, or some of the early Lego
models that were block-y and badly scaled. I think a lot of younger kids will
get a kick out of the simple models they can build by themselves and play
with.
However, I do have to say that, if they ship their "Space" series to the
States, it could start a whole new wave of nasty "Polack" jokes: those
vehicles look like they were made by lashing together pieces of old Yugos and
abandoned Soviet tanks. Ritvik has no reason to fear that Cobi will take a
piece of their "elaborate models from basic blocks" market niche.

Set 1160 (Coby military set): Is it just me or is there a BLOCKMEN figure in
the advertisement label of the box WITH the actual Cobi army figure?
Really...go look at it. Set 1160. Do these guys have utterly NO sense of
copyright? It's like Coke and Pepsi: they have shown each other's logos in
their commercials for years now. BUT, this cobi thing is like using a Pepsi
can's contents to sell coke classic....that is to clarify: to tell people to
drink the the pepsi, and if they prefer the pepsi then they should buy coke
because "coke is the same damn thing".
Which is totally untrue. As is the case here. Cobi won't have the BLOCKMEN
figure in the box, so why put it on the advertisment label?!?

As for the Military sets, the seem to be a mixture of Best-Lock Military and
Blockmen. The Best-Lock type minifigs have different guns and look more like
Germans in the jungle, while the Blockmen minifigs, wepons and pieces are exact
copies. The logo (Mala Armia) is taken from Galoob Toy's "Battle Squads"

Tore, do you know where Cobi is made or sold? This is very interesting.

Most of it seems to be a clear copy of LEGO. The headlights, and most of the
basic pieces, have a very big similarity to LEGO. It does seem that they're
violating a few trademark laws.

I noticed too. BUT...like I said in my other posting: What about those clear
minifig style heads that are used as the overhead flashing lights on the
larger ambulance set. Seriously...I think they have their own molds that were
designed using existing lego samples. It's all so sad.
Just for that we should make our own stuff, sell it on Brickbay, and when TLG
comes a knocking, just tell them that COBE gave us some samples. That will
stir up the pot!

Here's a similar example of blatant copying by a company in china that I
found. Every piece is a copy of a LEGO piece, they even copied the
instructions and the box. The only thing is that they don't fit each other
very well.

Yeah. I tell ya what, if those hairpieces fit a Lego minifig, I would buy that
set. That has the awesome old-style hairpiece that was in old Town and Castle
sets.

Y'know what though, Daniel, S@H still has an accesories set with three of
those (one in each of the hair colors)... it's <set:5393>. It should still be
available (it was last time I checked).

There may be hope... Take a look at the US 1999 S@H summer catalogue. On page
23, set #M100. It is a play mat that you can assemble from six large foam
pieces. Pictured on the upper right corner is a hospital that has never been
released by TLC. It is white with blue windows and roof. It has a helipad on
the roof and an ambulance parked in front. It looks juniorized.

So, who feels brave enough to tell Lego? Remember, all that time Cobi is
sitting on those shelves, Lego is losing revenue. Those Lego lawyers could
have Cobi out of business in no time, but I supose Cobi would just move to
another part of the world, under a new name, and start again...
BTW, has anyone noticed how evil the Cobi sun looks? Or maybe it's just
because I don't like them much.

Not as clear as the view at:

But even the one you pointed out is clearly slightly-different in
design from the original. Just take a good look at any fig in your
collection, and compare the fit of legs to hips.

Thzey even have a copy of DUPLO. Check this link:

But I suppose those sets are much cheaper as real LEGO and thus are
bought by the people. Poland is a rather poor country, compared to
western Europe and the USA.....
And since building with LEGO is much about using fantasy, I can't see
if there's something wrong with building with the wrong brand of
blocks. It's still better than buying cheap copies of Pokémons....
