Well, with Target and KMart having Lego sales, it was a good weekend to go
shopping. The bad part is that I am laid up with bad bronchitis, and so I had
to plan the fastest most efficient trip to visit these stores, where I coughed
my way around them in a state of near collapse, scattering the passers-by who
probably thought I had the plague from the sound of me. Still it kept the
aisles and checkouts clear as small children were pulled away from me by their
terrified parents who waved garlic and made the sign of the cross etc :-)

However, despite the recovery time required afterwards (flat on back gasping
for breath!), it was a good shopping expedition.

KMart Indooroopilly: All the new Harry Potter Lego was theoretically available
in KMart at various discounted prices, but the Chamber of Secrets had sold out
on Saturday and I did not spot the Aragog set either on shelf. There were no
UCS X-Wings on the shelf (at $119) but I asked/wheezed and the staff found two
more "out back" so it's worth asking/wheezing (no Chamber of Secrets out back
though -- they went like hot cakes and lots of people were asking about them
since, said the staff member). KMart Indooroopilly also had the Hogwarts Castle
at $119 (low enough for you, Richie?) and the King Leo's Castle for $99 (at
which point it has just became an acceptable price for what you get, IMHO).
There were also discounts on some of the Star Wars and other themes, but
nothing spectacular (i.e. no different to their other recent toy sales). The
Blue Tubs were down at $40 again, as with all KMart sales. If only those tubs
had colours like grey and tan and so forth.

Target Indooroopilly: Theoretically all the new Harry Potter was here, but
frankly many sets were missing to the extent that I could not find the pricetag
on the shelf. However, they did have the Chamber of Secrets (2 copies on my
arrival, 1 on my departure!). Target also had the 3 "girlie" HP sets (as Richie
likes to call them) at $14.99, so I stocked up on them for Christmas presents
for kids. Target also had the Spiderman sets and the werewolf and vampire
studio sets slightly reduced. Thanks to Richie's reviews on the vampire and
werewolf sets, I got one of the vampire sets.

So, for those who want prices, here's what I recorded ... compared with S@H
price (where available)

7191 UCS X-Wing  $119 KMart (normally $200+)
4709 Hogwarts Castle $119 KMart, $159.95 S@H
6098 King Leo's Castle $99 KMart, $195 S@H
1381 Vampire's Crypt, $34.99 Target, $36.40 S@H
4721/4722/4723 Hogwarts Classroom/Gryffindor House/Diagnon Alley, $14.99
Target, $20.95 S@H

new Harry Potter:

4726 Quidditch Practice, $22.95 Kmart, $24.95 S@H
4727 Aragog in the Dark Forest, $34.99 Target, $39.95 S@H
4728 Escape from Privet Drive, $54.95 KMart, $61.25 S@H
4729 Dumbledore's Office, $74.96 KMart, $99.95 S@H
4730 Chamber of Secrets $119 KMart, $119.99 Target, $139.95 S@H
4731 Dobby's Release $11.95 KMart, $13.95 S@H
4733 Duelling Club, $34.95 KMart, $39.95 S@H
4735 Slytherin $21.95 KMart, $20.99 S@H  **

[Aside. Looking at the numbers above, it makes me wonder what 4732 and 4734
will be. At that Lego show in the Netherlands last week, there were some large
sculptures of Harry Potter and the Snake in the Chamber of Secrets. I wonder if
they were just for display or whether we will be getting some large HP
sculptures?]

Note there were more discounted items than these at both stores but my brain
power to remember it all ran out. Also the prices of sets at KMart and Target
were not generally identical but varied only by a marginal amount.

As you can see, the best deals appear to the more expensive sets, as the
discounts on the small sets (relative to S@H) is quite small even as a
percentage. Indeed, in the case of Slytherin (**), the S@H price is actually
cheaper than the so-called discount price at KMart. Of course, S@H shipping
will cost you more than the bus fare or petrol to your local Target/KMart (for
most of us). Also, if you are a Coles Myer shareholder, your
ultimately-doomed-but-still-worth-something-now shareholder discount cards will
get you an additional 5% off the price at both Target and KMart so that makes
the prices even sweeter.

Given that for most of this year, I found little to tempt me in either KMart or
Target, it was a nice change to be overwhelmed with choice and my budget rather
than my enthusiasm being the constraint on my purchasing. As a result of
today's shopping expedition, I have done my Christmas shopping for 8 of the now
11 children I have to buy for, and of course a few things for Kiddus Maximus
(as my husband calls me).

Shop hard, play well!

Kerry

Having acquired and built the new Harry Potter sets, here's a brief review of them. For each one, I give the prices I paid about a week ago through local retailers with the S@H price shown for comparison. The price per piece (based on S@H prices) is (...)
