One of these days, all the geomancers of Castle World will have to get

Well, that's only natural, since I got the idea from you... :-)

LOL! I have a wizardess which I haven't decided whether she's a geomancer or a

Errr... Hortimancer?  =]

Druidess might fit well.  In fantasy games, they often have control over Earth,
Plant, and Animal magic.  The Druids in one of the early drafts of my Lego
wargame could cast Earth magic.

Well, it's not just for geomancers, but I've mentioned the "Gathering of the
Wise" once or twice, and I would eventually like to do it for CW.  It's sort
of like an annual* convention for wizards, sages, sorcerors, philosophers, and
other seekers of knowledge.  Wise folk from all over the world travel to
wherever it is being held to gather, exchange information, show off new spells
or enchantments, discuss their research, engage in academic politics, plot
against one another**, party hard at the local taverns***, and all sorts of
similar stuff.

I'm not ready to do this right now, of course, but it's something for all you
people with wizard-characters to keep in mind (and perhaps even work
references to into your storylines...)

J

* - not sure about it being annual...it might be every 5 or even 10 years,
depending.  Or it could be held whenever a full moon intersects with the star
Pecares in the Sigil of Omateion, a rare stellar junction...

** - but not act on those plots!  The Gathering is a 'neutral' zone where
wizards of all types may meet freely, without fear of coming under attack by
their enemies.

*** - The locals might welcome the Gathering at first because of all the money
it brings in, but they often come to regret their decision after finding out
what several score of drunken mages can do to a town in the name of "fun".
There's a reason the Gathering moves every year...

Ooooooh!! Count me in, definitely! Depending if this is going on in the
present or past, I might be able to contribute anywhere from 3 to 6 "wise"
people ;-)
I'd be very happy, even, to host the convention, although my inn will be way
to small to host the whole CW wisemen... We'll need minimum Eric K's inn for
that, I guess! <grin>

This sounds like something I'd enjoy doing. If anyone's interested, drop me a

Well, it's happened in the past, but I'd probably be hosting one happening
"now".  No reason there couldn't be flashbacks to past Gatherings, though.

The Red Fox will definitely be in attendance, as will the the Grey Wolf...and
of course Dr. Cornelius and his rival, the Learned Sage Liang Chu.  I hope

Maybe a few others - but I'd rather use my various wizardly pieces to recreate

'ey!  I orta know too, on account of it being my idea...:P  I want to get a

Well I could just give you mine... in fact if we end up hosting it in Boston
(will you want to host it?) we could work on it together, so I could gladly
join in and contribute to recreation of any minifigs that might be arriving
thru RDPs at any given moment... :-)

I hope Eric will join in. But just to make it clear (for other people): this
is totally NOT location-restricted! Rene (for example) could contribute all
the way from Germany just as well as I could from right here! And likewise for
anyone else, wherever you might be geographically.

Completely neutral.  Really.  That's the chief rule of the Gathering, and if
anyone breaks it, *all* of the other mages there are expected to, ah, how to
put it..."lay the great big magickal smackdown on them".

So far only one person's been foolish enough to try...Ganchin the Impetuous,
about 450 years ago.  After it was all over, the mages gave a heartfelt public
apology to the remaining population of the continent (things got a little out
of hand), but the area remains deserted to this day, except for foolish people
who want to find out if you really *can* still hear Ganchin's screams floating
on the wind.

The Red Fox will definitely be in attendance, as will the the Grey Wolf...and
of course Dr. Cornelius and his rival, the Learned Sage Liang Chu.  I hope

That was indeed my thought, because 2 brains are better than 1, and 3 or 4
(Eric, Dave) are better than 2...

Absolutely! We'll do everything possible to recreate your 'fig here so you
don't have to risk the vagaries of the Postal Service, but just as the
Gathering consists of wise folk from around the world, this project should
involve people from around our world...

No, as long as they behave and don't leave tomb dust and rotting-flesh

"The Gathering of the Wise" is the semi-official name, or "The Gathering"
for short.  I dunno if I'll be ready this June (or even able to make it
down to DC) though, so that might make it a little difficult.

I have a number of mages who are affixing their "Hello, my name is:" badges to
their robes and deciding whether they should attend the "Care and Feeding of
Familiars for Maximum Mana Potential" symposium or to hit the convention floor
and see if they can find an enchanted Backscratcher for a decent price.

Most likely, they'll all just get drunk in the tavern.  One of them will pass
out and the other guys will write things like "I am a Hedge Wizard" and
"Picklemancer" on his face with (what else?) a Magic Marker.  Then, for a final
trick, they will make all the gold in his pouch disappear and buy another round
for themselves.  Won't he be mad when he wakes up!

Watch out for those Hydromancers, though.  They have a strange control over
liquids and never seem to get drunk.  Also, I've never seen one have to use the
bathroom.

Anyway, I will be developing some of my mages and taking photos and adding them
to the website the next time I get a chance.  I've come up with a lot of new
characters, but haven't had time to write about them or even build them.

[2] Okay, reading this over, they kinda sound like Jedi. I guess I just think

Do these templars have any realation to the templars of Starcraft?  If you've

Heh. I may be the only computer gaming geek that hasn't. :)

Well, the High Templars in Starcraft are described as psionic aliens capable of
emitting storms of psionic energy and hallucinations, and two of them can join
to make a stronger creature (an Archon).

I modelled my human templars more after a combination of Star Wars Jedi, and
the templar character class in the MUD I play (www.thresholdrpg.com). The MUD
templars are mages which have sacrificed some types of spells in order to be
able to wield weapons. Like Jedi, my templars can manipulate the world around
them, but using magical rather than psionic principles (but NO midichlorians,
yuck).

Another important characteristic is that each (non-starcraft) templar has a
cause, a set of goals that they actively strive for. There are some pretty
horrific evils lurching, shambling, and creeping through my realms, and the
templars are one of the most potent forces keeping them in check.
