Jon!! Grr! You're too good. ;-) That is awesome. Damn, I hate it when people
shoot out a bunch of awesome models in a short span, then I remember their
name and start noticing it everywhere and can't stop admiring and oohing and
aahing at their stuff. I can tell you're going to be one of those people...
I checked out the rest of your brickshelf account, sweet stuff! I love the
telescope on the pirate ship there, and the Civil War scene is pretty nice.
To get back on topic for the WW group, here are a few questions/things to
ponder for you guys...
Did you know that in the later stages of the war, once the Contraband idea
was formed (allowing Northern soldiers to seize Southern "property" - i.e.
slaves - and then free them), and many slaves were indeed freed, the South
had an enourmous lack of cotton manufacturing power... it was so bad that
the Confederate soldiers were severly lacking uniform replenishments. I
wonder if you should show that by having them wear torn and tattered
clothes, etc.... this brought their morale down their too, you can bet.
Also, I would love to see someone create a scene from Sherman's march to the
sea (in Georgia). Have any of you heard of that? It was one of the first
challanges to convential warring techniques; instead of attacking soldiers,
General Sherman (from the North) ravaged what he called a "total war".
Houses were burnt down, as were crops, and many civilians killed on the way
from Atlanta to Savannah (or was it the other way around? I can't remember
ATM). It would be really interesting to show the Union soldiers entering a
Southern town, a battle scene but involving an actual town.
Also, about cowboys, one girl in my class wrote her junior thesis about
cowboys. It was interesting - they mostly weren't the tough rowdy good guys
we see in movies.... they handled hordes of cattle (thus the name), leading
them from areas in the southwest up north, towards the main railroad lines
and to the market. The job was *not* pretty...
Plus, did you know why the "industry" of cow-driving died? Firstly, a
repeated disease struck a large percentage of the cattle for a few years
repeatedly... then the last blow came in the form of... none other than the
invention of electric-wire-fences. Farmers who were getting their crops
damaged by the cows' grazing could now fence off their lands; grazing land
disappeared rapidly and that was simply the final blow. In addition,
railroads were explanding, so the distance the cows had to be sent to
diminished as well. Thus the demise of *true* cowboys. ;-)
OK, enough history lessons for one day for y'all. Take care :-)

I believe (I could be wrong) that he was creating a smaller cannon that mounts off the railing of the ship! I did the same thing on (...) (23 years ago, 6-Jun-01, to lugnet.western)
