Mark’s is an example of a layout where there are more bricks in the trains than the layout! But I agree with Larry that just because you put more bricks into your scenery it doesn’t mean that’s where the effort lies.

My smallest engine, an 0-4-0 OF class shunter, has been an ‘in development’ model for over five years - constantly improved for detail as more useful parts become available.

For large buildings, a lot of the work can be repetitive - once you’ve worked out how to build one floor, or fit an elaborate window, you buy bulk and repeat. Admittedly the same may be true if you want to build a line of identical rolling stock, but buildings usually result in something bigger.

Our club layouts have generally used long and narrow sections, so you just have a slice of town or countryside alongside the railway, rather than an entire planned city. So, although you have a fair amount of scenery, the trains remain the focal point.
