  Which to collect - 4.5v, 9v, 12v

Hello everyone, I am wanting to start collecting trains. I am looking for some advice. Which is the best? What are the pros & cons of each type? 4.5v, 9v, & 12v. ---...--- This is what I already have: 107 - 4.5v Motor & Battery Box (URL) - 12v (...) (...) Cool! If you have any 4.5V or 12V stuff, you might want to bring it and do 10-15 minutes on the history of LEGO trains. I'd also bring any recent stock trains that you have, and some MOCs. Print out a variety of Track Designer plans to show (...) (24 years ago, 27-Sep-00, to lugnet.trains.org)

  Re: Which to collect - 4.5v, 9v, 12v

(...) My thinking is collect all of them, 4.5, 9, and 12v. Buy the ones you like and skip the ones you don't. If you do collect different types of trains you may want to run them on the same track. If that is the case, and for me it is, then you may (...) (24 years ago, 3-Oct-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.trains.org)

  How do LEGO trains work?

This is probably going to seem really silly to all of you, but how do LEGO trains work? Based on the references to 9V vs. 12V, etc. I suspect that they're actually motorized, working trains, but maybe that's only for lights and things? Or do you (...) (24 years ago, 21-Oct-00, to lugnet.trains)

Thanks for everybody's input. I have made a decision. I am going to buy as many of the 12V trains as I can afford. (I might even buy some to sell on eBay so I can afford more!) I can then always convert to 9V later on (if they are still available?). (...) (24 years ago, 12-Oct-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.trains.org)

Zhengrong- It will not be possible to use the 4.5 volt or 12 volt track with the 9 volt system. In the 4.5 volt track, the rails are plastic and the train run on batteries.
