That sounds like what we call around here a Trackmobile. Many of the
Ford plants use them to move Auto Racks around. NS also owns some for
MoW uses. They use the regular wheels to drive the rail wheels, the
rail wheels don't move on their own, i.e. there is no traction motor
in them, interesting however, is that most of these Trackmobiles do
seem to have sandboxes and seem that they can operate easily in either
direction, perhaps the drivers chair spins around, I'm not really
sure.
Oh and my site, Sixby Fire Tech has been showcasing six stud wide
trucks since October 30th, 1997. Even though they are all just Fire
Trucks, I thought I'd throw that in there.
