Hey Will-

Don't mess around-- go out and buy Model Railroader Cyclopedia Vol 1 Steam
Locomotives.  It contains schematics of every iteration of steam engine built
in the US.

I doubt it...I really do.  The Cyclopedias are great for 4 8 1/2 mainline
stuff, but suck wind for any smaller/NG stuff.

Well, okay, I guess I assumed we were talking about standard gauge, seeing as how
LEGO gauge is even *wider* to scale than standard gauge, so how could you possibly
model NG in minifig scale using LEGO track.  You can't.  I guess I should have
said "every major iteration".  But all of that notwithstanding, you won't find a
more comprehensive resource than this book.

How many photo's/drawings are there even of engines like the Kirkfield Quarry
engines?

Huh?

(nice 0-4-0's in 3' gauge, and one in 4 8 1/2 gauge)
How about the EBT 2-8-2's?  Or K-36's? :)

Huh?

Or 80HP Sentinels?

Huh?

Or of engines like HOSS (Porter Air Engine 4077)

Huh?

The cyclopedias are great as a general source of knowlage though...you won't go
too wrong buying them but they are not essential, nor are they in any way
inclusive of all possible designs.

Well, for that matter, what is?  Nothing, so what's your point?  What's unbeatable
is that it contains schematics for these engines-- side, front, back, top.  If you
are looking to model an engine, it doesn't get any better than that unless you
actually buy a model from which to model.  What's also nice about the drawings is
that you can blow them up on a copier to the exact size you want to model.

There are lots of good sites on the web
with photographs...the hard cover books are not as important of a ref. as they
used to be.

Photos are good for inspiration (the book has several hundred); drawings are good
for navigation.....you get the idea;-)  BTW, the book is a soft cover.
