Usually. Indeed, sand is still important, but nowadays antislip
microprocessors and high adhesion trucks, as well as the fact that all
axles are powered, greatly reduces the need for it except in extreme

Moot. Well, I'd do what model railroading does, plus more. To wit:

In MR blind(1) center drivers are used, or the center axle is often
loose in its guide ways. In LegoLand we have the way that the PNLTC gang
and others have shown. Articulated frames so not all the driver axles
are parrallel when going round the bend.

3 - drivers as in powered wheels, not as in the UK word for locomotive
engineer

This "second 3" should have been a 4. Sorry about that, chief!

1 - a blind driver is one without flanges so it slides around on top of
the rail a bit. Even prototype locomotives used these. it is NOT an
engineer who suffered a horrible industrial accident.
