Allow me, Larry;-)  No, 8 wide isn't okay, it's *perfect*.  It looks
perfectly natural and dimensionally sound IMHO

Or is that too wide for scale (isn't the Metroliner 6-studs
wide?)?

All of the TLC's trains are 6 wide-- think of them as Town Junior on
rails;-)   Maybe it's just me, but I think snowmobiles and trains
*shouldn't* be the same width;-)

I wish I had more windows. Remember I'm not very good at the
detailed stuff (^:

Get a book or a magazine and use it as a guide.  Keep on building!
