Here’s a crazy idea...

How about one or more of the larger Lego train clubs that attend shows set up the following layout: a 30 x 50 foot layout (or some such large size) with no power provided at all. No batteries. No electricity. Not even solar power.

Power would be provided by having an AFOL or visitors attending the show take turns and pull the trains around the layout. This could be a vehicle for protesting the demise of 9V and at the very least would be an interesting conversation starter I bet.

Using this method, the train lengths would only be limited by the upper arm strength of the person pulling it - so prototypical 100+ car trains (1) could be moved around at realistic scale speeds. That would be an impressive sight to behold, all those double stack intermodal cars, boxcars, tank cars, etc. going down the tracks as the person pulls them along. Plus, younger kids would probably have fun pulling the trains along (although you may have to limit the length based on their age and relative strength). This seems like a win-win situation in that it may send a clear message to TLC and have the benefit of involving the public in a unique way at a train show other than just watching the trains go around the track.

(1) I assume that neither 9V or batteries can handle 100+ cars at a time?

(...) Actually, the magnetic couplers would be the limiting factor before the strength of the person pulling the train became an issue. I'm sure someone here knows what the critical number of cars is before the lead coupler can no longer bear the (...) (17 years ago, 23-Oct-07, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

(...) Hi Bob, that assumption is not perfectly correct. In October 2006 a single 12V engine (powered by 2 motors) has pulled this 100 waggons train. (URL) A few months earlier we have made this attempt with a 9V engine pulling 61 cars. But we had (...) (17 years ago, 23-Oct-07, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
