Since plastic track seems to be here to stay, Common sense tells me Lego is eventually going to kill off the 9v line. Knowing this, we as a community need to think about eventually converting to plastic rails. This also means now would be a great time to tell Lego what we need for plastic rails to work for us.

This leads me to my question; given the current IR RC train line what changes do you see necessary for you to convert from 9v track to plastic track and why?

Bring back the 4.5 volt trains, with the good plastic track. That’s what I’d like to see. And the cuuuuute little battery boxes! Bwah-hah-hah-hah-haaaaaah!

Okay, seriously--

I never got the 9v train system; I sorta felt like it was not in line with what I felt was the essence of LEGO: plastics. Metal tracks just didn’t look right with all the train station, city buildings, etc. Since that was where LEGO US went, it killed the 4.5v trains quickly. It was only by being willing to pay the cost in Pounds (plus shipping), and a promise to never, EVER order from the UK LEGO service again unless I moved to the UK, that got me enough track to have a decent layout.

Therefore, I’d like to see the new plastic track work with the old plastic track, at least. That way, I could seriously extend my layout. If nothing else, make an adapter track from one type of track to another. I haven’t checked for compatability, but it doesn’t look like it’ll mate based on what I have seen from the new plastic track boxes.

Play Well!

(...) It's possible you could get reasonable running by butting them up against one another, but no, they're not really designed to click together. If you ask Ondrew nicely, he may be able to come up with a nice adapter solution though. ROSCO (17 years ago, 20-Feb-07, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.parts.mod, FTX)
