I would go for the Cargo train. It has everything you need to get started plus
a turnout which is not offered in the other sets. It also comes with a light
kit.
Be aware that there are two different version of the Hogwarts train. One is not
powered.
Once you have the basics its easy to add parts as needed through Bricklink.

| Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I have to go with the Cargo Train. I had not thought about the turnout and the light kit. The MHEx has more peices but that includes the station and mostly regular building parts. I have lots of regular LEGO. (...) (20 years ago, 20-Jul-04, to lugnet.trains)
