I hadn't really thought of this question in a while - most of us who hang out
here in .trains build our own designs.

I guess I'd say "anything that comes with track and a speed regulator!"

I'd even drop that requirement unless you're giving it as a gift, or want the
one stop shopping aspect... Curved track and speed regulators can be had very
cheaply on BrickLink so you can get by with something that doesn't have them.

That
way you'll have everything you need in one box, and you'll be ready to go right
away.  The re-released Metroliner, the Hogwarts, the Cargo Train -- they'd all
be good starting trains.

Pick whichever one looks the best for you, and I think you'll be happy.

That's good advice indeed! Or even get one that has good parts and build what
you want out of it.
