A brief reflexion on power sources

Hi all,

When browsing Brickshelf's catalog database tonight, I came across this text
from the 1969 belgian catalog:
http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/catalogs/1969/c69be/c69be-07.html
In simple terms, it states something that appeared obvious back then: a child
would first own a pushtrain, then a battery-operated train, and then proceed to
a more complex power source (a power controller).

Well, this logic was indeed followed by LEGO up until the eighties. However,
since the 9V trains were introduced, the only push train I can remember was
Harry Potter's (and even this train was not under "trains" in the catalog).

So I decided to ask your views on the re-introduction of the "evolutionary"
train concept.

In my perspective, there are already some advantages when compared to 1969: all
(?) electric devices by LEGO now work with 9V, making the "jump" between battery
and controller much easier (if introduced, evidently); the rails are now smooth
enough for trains to run easy (when pushed) AND are electrified, thus
eliminating the need for the central rail then put to use; and a considerable
number of consumers has been consistently asking for new track options, which is
proof of this segment's will for new products.
Plus, under this line of thinking, the introduction of DCC by LEGO would become
a much natural step for the consumer - "I now have too many trains to control,
so now I must get myself a new control-system"... ;-)

Of course, from LEGO's POV, the question will always be "Will such concept work
again?"

What do you think? More importantly, why?

Pedro

(...) become (...) control, (...) What would be really nice is if Lego built train motors that accepted the plug-in style DCC decoders. The motors would ship with a dummy plug that merely routed power from the track to the motor and headlight (...) (21 years ago, 24-Jul-03, to lugnet.trains)
