Hi Andy,

long time ago, since we once met in Braunschweig.... Thanks for your nice words
on my "Steppenpferd".
Which by the way does not mean "tap dancing horse" (=Stepp-Pferd), but prairie
horse (prairie = Steppe). As far as I know it bears that name because it needed
not too much maintenance, water and coal. Despite of that fact the engine was
driven with a much bigger tender of the BR50 during the 50ies. That tender has
had a windshield then. It would look like this in that case:

Does it have a more
literal meaning in German perhaps? It's really good, whatever the meaning,
although I'm not sure the driver's would have been happy running at 100kmh
backwards! - not only would the driver be on the wrong side to see the
signals, but the wheel arrangement means that any track transitions (curves
and pointwork etc) would be straight onto the driving wheels, rather than
onto the small pony wheel when running forwards.

I just tried to check this, but the text I was referring too, could have lead
me to a misunderstanding. I am not too sure any more, if this model actually
was driving the 100 km/h in both directions. But at least the T9 - a engine
with the same wheel arrangement did it (at 90 km/h).

I do like the middle driving wheel mounting arrangements, its always
frustrating that three large wheels must be articulated - yours is a neat
solution that will probably find its way to Birmingham.

In fact that has been a idea of a fellow AFOL from the 1000steine board. I
think Michale Schian has been the one to do that first in this way (but without
fixing the axle against falling out).

Leg Godt!

Ben

Ben, Once again you've excelled yourself! I particularly like the hopper wagons, they really do capture the look of the German prototype - its amazing how much difference a few details can make, a real improvement on the standard blue hopper.
