Instructions for my Orient Express style passenger cars and steam locomotive

James,

My jaw hit the floor when I saw the thumbnail on Brickshelf ... this looks
gorgeous!  Great job with the detailing, especially along the top of the
boiler, and with the colors.  I love the red accents, and the yellow trim on
the steam pistons.

Thanks, but I do realized that other steamers (yours included) have far more
detail-- and the drive rods!  -- for a much more intricate and realistic look.

Was this model built out of brick, as well?  I'd love to see some pictures.

Uh, oops.  Sorry, I should've been very clear about that:  sadly, no
real-brick version.  I "cheat" so badly with these designs.  Note the large
red drive wheels.  I *thought* I really had 6 of these elements in red in my
collection, but it turns out that the wheels I have are smaller than those
shown in the CAD images.  The CAD large red wheels are the same size as some
gray wheel hubs found in large sets of the older "Expert Builder" and
"Technic"  models.  I thought I had 8 of these large wheels in gray, but I
can only locate four of them :-(

So, no pictures.

How does it run - looking it over, it seems as if it would not have any
problems, though sometimes the connection between the pushing tender and the
engine can be a bit problematic.

I would like to think it would run OK, but who knows?
I put only two pivot points on the locomotive: only at the front and rear
guide wheels.  I think the track action would be similar to that of, say a
double-bogie passenger car.  The large drive wheels would slide side-to-side
across the top of the rails.  The tender pushes against the pivot-point of
the rear guide wheel bogie-- could be a problem, but I don't know.

Beautiful work!  Congrats on another great design ... and welcome back to the
world of *real* trains (as opposed to those pesky turbines,
internal-combustions or electrics)  ;)

A step closer to *real* trains, but it is still CAD-only.
Thanks for the comments.

later,
James Mathis
