Funny you posted this. I just swapped out the blue-voilet for dark red on my
Royal Hudson. What I find interesting is how many of the new colors play all
kinds of tricks on your eyes. The dark red stripe on my model looks rather
brown. Sorry no pics yet, I'm waiting on a Bricklink order for the rest of
the dark red bricks :)

Some time ago I was asked by a Canadian LEGO train modeler why I used blue
violet. Originally I was going for a (non-prototypical for the engine)
Reighngold livery to match the coaches, the LEGO blue-violet is stunning,
and there was no dark red way back then :)

How much dark red did you say you'd got, Larry?  :-)

Just the one picture so far.  This is a 4F 0-6-0 'Fowler', a British freight
locomotive in the proper colours of the London Midland and Scottish Railway
(LMS).

All the dark red here has come from the Star Wars Episode II sets - the
Gunship, the Starfighter, the Swoop bike and the Jedi Duel.  This gives you
the following to work with:
2x3 bricks, 2x2 round bricks, 2x2 45° slopes
1x2 plates, 2x2 plates, 2x4 wedge plates right/left
1x2 curved-top bricks, 2x2 curved-top with central studs
1x2 grill tiles, 1x6 tiles
Umbrella stands

And that's it.  This was the first model locomotive I had as a kid, so it's
nice to make a LEGO one now.

(...) For that matter, some of the old colors can play the same tricks. I have a standard red MOC that I wanted to have a dark gray stripe. When I actually used dark gray, the colors were really hard to look at (kinda like red and green together). (...) (22 years ago, 20-Aug-02, to lugnet.trains)

Here's a few shots of the redesigned RH with Dark Red Stripes and some very clever SNOT work suggested by Jason Railton and some follow on ideas from James Mathis. You can see the details implemented in the image rh5-600. deep links... (URL) (...) (22 years ago, 26-Aug-02, to lugnet.trains) !
