Do 12V trains have the same bases as 9V
trains (with the holes)?

Yes, the 6x28 train baseplates work with both engines.

Have you seen anyone convert a 12V train into a 9V train?

Yes - if you search through Brickshelf or the LTC websites, you will

wires inside the engine.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid Stanford students!

Paul Sinasohn, who is almost as new to trains as you :-)
