Thanks! It's predominately 12-wide, going to about 14-wide over the
cab steps, windowsills, and cylinders. Scarily, I started with the
same trucks and an 8-wide chassis. I rebuilt this to 10-wide when
I thought it looked a bit puny, and ended upscaling it again when
I'd finished the mechanism and started to look at the boiler and
other upper-body work.

I think that's an appealing approach, since you could lay a permanent
route in the garden. Incidentally, has anyone experimented with
weatherproofing Lego track? I assume the ABS won't biodegrade quickly,
and it might be possible to separate the metal rails, treat them in
some way (galvanise?) and clip the whole lot back together.
I'm just guessing though. Any materials scientists out there?
