Well, my 10020s arrived yesterday, and so I built one using a 9 volt
motor, and kit-bashed the other 2 to modify my Super Chief MOC.  Here
are a few pics of the 2 together for comparison in my Super Chief
folder:

What I noticed most is that when you look at the 10020 by itself, it
looks pretty "correct".  Only when you put it up to an 8 wide version
does its "toyishness" really come through.  Which is okay, of course,
because it *is* a toy:-)

I would never say that mine is better, just different in a more
prototypical kind of way:-)

Less prototypical :-)... BEAUTIFUL, but less prototypical.

*Less*?  It may have shortcomings, but *comparatively* speaking, I'd say more
in a NYM.

While the way your tankage/skirting came out is just great, way way better
than LDs, when I look at the rest of the engine I can't help but thinking
it's too squarish.

Yes, unfortunately, we 8 widers got shafted when it came to TLC curve
production.   The smallest half round fits into the next size, but there is a
gap from that size to the largest half round.  *That* is our missing link to
create truly proto curves for 8 wide.

What's really interesting is that when looking at the 10020 in my comparison
pic, it has the *perfect* shape of the F7, *when you exclude the windshield and
all above*.  If one were to cut all of that off and place windshield in the
remaining space, it would be right on.  Of course, the scale will have changed
in the process-- probably around "S" scale (between HO and O).  MFs would be
too large and the LEGO track gauge would be *way* too wide, but the *shape* of
the unit would be just right...

The nose curvature (from the front and from the top), the
roof curvature, all suffer from the extra flatness induced by the extra two
studs.

I could (and still might on further iterations) raise it a plate, which would
help out that situation.  The color scheme played a role in flattening out the
nose (as did electrification).  J-1 did a great monochrome nose study; maybe
he'll take some pics and post it.

It's a beautiful model but it looks more like an ALCO FA to me than an EMD
F. But that's OK. FAs are nice machines. Almost as nice as PAs.

I think I'll try some other roads and play with the F7s design a bit.  Because
of the coloration stripe on the side of the Super Chief loco, the venting
across the top sides is only 1 brick high when clearly it should be more.
Without constraints such as coloration, I should be able to make an even more
proto version.
